on the shore
A Meditation on the Saint Lawrence River
I sit on the rugged shore
and gaze at the river.
Early morning. Early evening.
The river seems like an ocean, a veritable ocean.
The mighty Saint Lawrence.
Only one shore visible.
on the shore includes a collection of 6 images and 10 short poems,
which have been translated into French.
The images and poems in this book are my impressions of this body of water,
this mighty river, caught in history and in my imagination.
The cover of the artist’s book features a line drawing of the Saint Lawrence River’s course.
The photographs are presented as two triptychs, one at the beginning of the book,
and one at the end.
The book includes a short history of the The River and A Map of Names,
a graphic representation of the names of the many towns found along the Gaspé shore.
While I was working on the exhibition Light and Fog, 2023-2024,
I spent time in the town of Métis-sur-Mer, a small town on the shores
of the Saint Lawrence.
This was my first encounter with the river.
The mythic river was ever-present, only one shore visible.
A source of inspiration.
I spent time walking on the shore. witnessing the tides, the birds
and the weather. I had heard stories of how large and mysterious the river was.
I was not disappointed.
I began to think about the historic importance of this waterway.
A key route for exploration and trade since the early days of European colonization,
having previously been inhabited for centuries by indigenous peoples.

Wild waves and seagulls diving for lunch.
Empty crabs and mussel shells amongst
The seaweed, the lunch victims.
